Later on we will be visiting one of the most picturesque and historical villages of Crete. Located next to the sacred mount Juctas of the Minoans, right inside a very fertile valley next to the ancient river Keratos, was always the economical center of the region. It was always since the prehistoric times a wine making center of the island, with the famous “rozaki” and “vilana” grape varieties. The village has preserved its traditional architecture, a combination of venetian, byzantine and neoclassical style. Wander around the narrow paved streets, take a photo of the two storied buildings colored in ochra with wooden tiled roofs and beautiful courtyards that seem like the extension of the street, full of blooming flowers, grape arbors and jasmines spreading all over their intoxicating aromas! Blend with the locals when you sit in a traditional Kafenio, have a cup of coffee with them and try some of the local meze plates with great raki, the local spirit.
