According to the legends the island was created by Zeus (or Dias as he is also called): Zeus one day as he was sitting in his throne on the mountain top of Olympus, he turned his head to his birthplace, Crete. When he saw that his Cretans were hunting down with bows and spears his beloved wild goats, the famous Kri Kri, wiping them out, he got extremely angry! The goats were children of Amaltheia, of the goat that nurtured Zeus with milk while he was hiding from his father Cronos in Diktaion Antron cave. He got so furious, that he decided to punish all the Cretans. Immediately without a second thought, he blew one of his thunders into the sea and a huge monster emerged to devour the Cretans. However, the other gods who had never seen Zeus so angry, tried to change his mind, but in vain. Then, Poseidon, the God of the Seas, said to Zeus: “My dear father and king, if you kill the Cretans, along with them you will devastate also the Kourites. Is that the way to repay them for all the good they offered You?”
Kourites were these mythical warriors of Crete, who were protecting baby Zeus and were hitting their swords on their shields every time he was crying, so that his father, Cronos, could not hear the baby’s crying and find out where he was, cause Cronos was devouring his children.. Zeus immediately calmed down and changed his mind. He took two pieces of paximadi (the traditional rusk-bread of Crete) and threw them towards Crete. As the monster turned on the side to grab them, Zeus with a thunderbolt petrified the beast with the rusks. That’s why the Island of Dia looks like a crocodile emerging from the sea and that’s how the two islets Paximadi and Petalidi were born…
